Volunteers Supporting Student Learning Inside and Outside the Classroom

Jackie Nicholls - Beatrice Strong Public School

For the past three years, Jackie Nicholls has been an active volunteer at Beatrice Strong Public School. Coming to the school twice a week, sometimes more, Jackie has built a strong rapport with the students and staff, and supports a wide range of activities – from working with small groups of students in Grades 2 and 4 to complete literacy tasks, to supporting the Mathletes program, to helping with special events such as Mall Day, the annual Bazaar and Book Fairs. She has also volunteered with the school’s Challenger Baseball Club, sharing her love of baseball and the Blue Jays in particular, with students!

“Jackie is an incredible volunteer that has been giving her time and sharing her expertise at Beatrice Strong Public School in many ways,” shares Doreen Van Den Broek, Grade 2 Teacher.

“Volunteers like Jackie make it possible to run extra events, programs and teams. Thank you, Jackie!” she adds.

Nancy Bahniuk - East Northumberland Secondary School

Nancy Bahniuk is recognized as an enthusiastic volunteer and mentor in East Northumberland Secondary School (ENSS) and in the community. Nancy runs several fundraising initiatives throughout the year, including food drives, pancake breakfasts, weekly Bingo, and selling holiday-themed toys for pets and Valentine’s Day gifts in support of community programs and school initiatives such as the ENSS Chique Boutique and the student nutrition program.

Nancy’s enthusiasm for volunteering is especially evident in her role as advisor to the ENSS LEOS (a junior division of the Brighton Lions Club). She recruits students and supports their involvement in the club with fundraising efforts, community service and collaboration with the ENSS Environmental Club. This year, with Nancy’s guidance and help from the Lions, the LEOS raised a significant amount of money for the Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guide Program.

“As leader of the LEOS group, Nancy helps young people develop valuable leadership skills and gain experience working together to support the broader community!” says Tracey Burke, Principal of ENSS.
